Prior to becoming mayor, he was a school teacher, a member of the Hawaii territorial House of Representatives from 1944-1946 as well a member of the Hawaii territorial senate from 1946-1950. After his death in 1975, his succesor renamed the Honolulu Convention Center/Honolulu International Center in his honor, calling it the Neal S. Blaisdell Center. The convention center was the site where in January 1973, history was made when Elvis Presley(http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=837) performed there to a live world-wide audience. He suffered a fatal stroke the day before his 73rd birthday.
