Sid James is arguably Britains most well-loved comic actor. He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, his parents being showbiz stars at the time. His early years were spent as a diamond cutter and polisher, as well as an amatuer boxer. At the outbreak of World War II, Sid joined the forces, with part of his duties being entertainments organiser. After the war he purchased a one way ticket to England, arriving on Christmas Day, 1946. He starred in many stage productions, before starring in gangster movies. His role in "The Lavender Hill Mob" was spotted by comedy writers Galton and Simpson. This led to his appearences in the classic shows of Tony Hancock. He also appeared in sitcoms such as "Bless this House". It was his Carry-On movie appearences that gave Sid his place in history. Appearances as Sir Sidney Ruff-Diamond (Carry on up the Khyber, 1968), The Rumpo Kid (Carry on Cowboy, 1965) and Gladstone Screwer (Carry on Again, Doctor, 1969) helped to make Sid a household name.
He died following his second heart attack at the Sunderland Empire. (bio by: Kieran Smith)
