Actor. Born in Tokyo, Funakoshi debuted in 1948 with the film "Beautiful Enemy." He is particularly remembered for his role in the World War II movie "Fires on the Plain" (1959) by Kon Ichikawa. His work earned him the "Best Actor" award from the Mainichi Film Concours and the Kinema Junpo Award. His many credits, in a career that spanned more than 30 years, include "Bridge of Japan" (1956), "Warm Current" (1957), "Afraid to Die" (1960), "Ghost Story of Kakui Street" (1961), "The Money Dance" (1964), "Gamera" (1965), "The Night Before Pearl Harbor" (1968), "The Attack of the Monsters" (1969) and "Tora-San's Rise and Fall" (1975). (bio by: José L Bernabé Tronchoni)
