| Birth: | Feb. 11, 1838 Dover-Foxcroft Piscataquis County Maine, USA | | Death: | May 22, 1931 Cedar Rapids Linn County Iowa, USA |  US Congressman. He graduated from Harvard University and was admitted to the bar in Mason City, Iowa. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army serving in Company B, 32nd Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, until he was discharged in 1863. He commenced the practice of law in Charles City, Iowa and was superintendent of public schools of Floyd County in 1868 and 1869. From 1870 to 1872, he was a member of the State house of representatives. In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third and Forty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1877. Not a candidate for re-nomination he was appointed president of the Republican State convention at Des Moines, Iowa, in 1877. He studied for the ministry, was ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church and continued ministerial duties until he retired in 1918. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
