William L (Billy) Williams was born in Illinois, the son of James Williams and Loreinda Williams. He joined the Illinois 40th Infantry CO. F in Aug 1861 and was a prisoner of war at Andersonville prison. He mustered out as a Corporal in June of 1865.
His first marriage was to Lydia (Lidya) A. Tooley Aug. 25, 1866 with which he had at least 6 children.
He is laid to rest next to Lydia even though, as shown in newspaper obits, he had remarried.
The following are excerpts from three newspaper articles:
"Flora Journal-Record" Sailor Springs news column:
"Billy Williams died of heart trouble. The funeral will be held at the Christian Church. The remains laid to rest at No. 4 cemetery. "
"The Masonic funeral of Billy Williams was held Sunday afternoon at the Christian Church, preached by Rev. Kelly. He leaves one son, five daughters, an aged widow and lots of other relatives and friends. We lost a good neighbor and friend and extend our sympathy to the family."
From the Clay City news column:
"A. S. & M Lodge no 488 of Clay City attended the funeral of W. L Williams at Sailor Springs last Sunday afternoon. He was in years passed a resident of Clay City, having served in the 40th Illinois infantry in the Civil War. Internment was not made until Monday pending the arrival of a daughter, Mrs. Isabel Chaney of Gifford, Idaho."
