Isaiah Ryan was born in Fowler, New York, and when he was eighteen years old (some accounts place him at fifteen years old), his parents were paid $100.00 for him to take the place in the United States Army of a man who had been drafted, as was acceptable custom at that time. He served in the 193rd Infantry of the New York Volunteers. He was a dispatch rider through the Cumberland Gap during the Civil War, carrying messages between the Union Armies.
Isaiah became a farmer and mason contractor in southern Wisconsin, living his last days in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. He married Elizabeth Wilson, and they had three children: Louis James Ryan of Lake Geneva, Joeseph of Elkhorn, and Bessie (Mrs. Sam) Dunbar of Rockford, Illinois.
Elizabeth predeceased him by three years. Isaiah was the last surviving member of the Grand Army of the Republic in Walworth County. Some records show him dying on April 10, 1941, and others as simply 1940.
His grave marker has "Ryan" on one side and "Wilson" on the other. It is listed in the records as owned by the Wilsons.
