Singer. Born Kim Jonghyun in Seoul, South Korea, he is best remembered as the lead singer of the famous Korean boy band SHINee. He debuted with SHINee under SM Entertainment in May of 2008 with the single "Replay." SHINee quickly found fame and success, with Jonghyun being one of the most popular members due to his vocal talent. Their first studio album, "The SHINee World", won them the Newcomer Album of the Year at the 23rd Golden Disk Awards in late 2008. From 2009 to 2016, SHINee released 9 studio albums in Korean and Japanese, five EPs and dozens of singles. Jonghyun developed songwriting and producing skills, having contributed to the production of many SHINee songs, and the writing and producing of his own solo studio albums, "She Is" in 2016 and "Story Op. 2" in 2017. Jonghyun also appeared in two documentaries about SM Entertainment, "I AM" (2012) and "SMTOWN The Stage" (2015), in addition to scores of radio shows, celebrity reality TV shows and music stage shows. He was also a regular radio host on MBC Blue Night from 2012-2017. Jonghyun was additionally well known for his advocacy of acceptance of LGBT people in South Korea, and for his openness about mental health issues. After having struggled with depression for years, Jonghyun was found unconscious in his apartment on December 18, 2017. He was rushed to the hospital, but died en route in the ambulance. The cause of death was found to be suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning. The album, Poet Artist, was released posthumously on January 23rd, 2018? The album debuted at number 177 on the US Billboard 200, being his first to chart on the list. All proceeds from the album went to Jonghyun's family to start The Shiny Foundation, which helps struggling young artists.
