A fervent patriot, George Taylor served in the Virginia Militia of the Continental Forces during the American Revolution. He is listed in the Daughters of the American Revolution books as a Private (1777-79) under Capts. Joseph Crockett, William Moseley, and Charles Fleming, Cols. William Russell, Holt Richerson, and William Heth. He was laid to rest in 1801 at the "Head of Cedar Creek" on the family's plantation on Short Hill Mountain. I recently spoke with the Rockbridge County Genealogical Society and the current owner of most of Short Hill Mountain (Mar 2007) both concur that this is a lost cemetery. The owner said he had been contacted by several researchers over the years and no one has yet been able to find anything even remotely resembling an old family burial ground. He did say that there are two "heads of Cedar Creek" both running off the mountian, but that they are mostly swamp land today. Though the cemetery may be lost it is not forgotton nor are the brave pioneers who helped forge this nation.
