US Senator, Missouri Governor. Admitted to the bar in Kentucky, he soon moved to St. Louis, Missouri and joined the law firm of his cousins. He held public office continually for 20 years, with his party affiliation fluctuating with the times: Whig, Benton Democrat, Republican, Liberal Republican and Democrat. At the beginning of the Civil War he served as Colonel and commander of the 4th United States Reserves, a three-month enlistment unit. In 1863 he was elected as a Senator from Missouri to the United States Senate, filling the vacancy caused by the expulsion of Senator Waldo P. Johnson, and serving until 1867. He was then elected as Governor of Missouri, serving from 1871 to 1872. He was the Liberal Republican Democratic candidate for Vice President in 1872, running with Horace Greeley for President, but the ticket was soundly defeated by the Republican ticket headed by Ulysses S. Grant.
