Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served during the Civil War as a Private in Battery A, 1st Missouri Volunteer Light Artillery. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery on April 28 and 29, 1863. His citation reads "With two comrades voluntarily took position on board the steamer Cheeseman, in charge of all the guns and ammunition of the battery, and remained in charge of the same for a considerable time while the steamer was unmanageable and subjected to a heavy fire from the enemy". His Medal was awarded to him on March 10, 1896. His two comrades in the brave deed, Henry A. Hammel and Joseph Pesch, were also awarded the Medal of Honor. All three men are buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery. After the war, he served an apprenticeship with a St. Louis photographer. He had a very successful career photographing well-to-do citizens of St. Louis and was honored at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair for his work in photography. (bio by: Connie Nisinger)
