He is best-known for producing stage plays in the mid-nineteenth century and wrote popular burlesques and peroidicals. He was born in Manchester and entered the Middle Temple but soon took to writing. Perhaps his finest work was "The Upper Crust", "Cyrils Success" (1868) and "Our Boys" (1868) which ran for twenty years. He was also editor of "Fun" magazine. (bio by: s.canning)
