YORKANA John Willard Strayer, Sr., 85, fell asleep in death on Thurs day, March 15, 2007, at the home of his son, where he had lived for the past several years. John was born in West York, on October 21, 1921. He was a son of the late Martin L. and Jennie E. (George) Strayer. He was the husband of Helen E. (Clark) Strayer, who died in 1956. John served in the U.S. Army during WWII with Company B 111th Combat Engineers Battalion in Italy and Northern Africa. He was awarded a good conduct medal along with the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five bronze stars. Upon returning to York, he worked for 39 years at Medusa Portland Cement. After retiring, he spent much of his time in the volunteer ministry as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was affectionately called Pap by those who came to know and love him. John is survived by four children, Earl M. Clark and his wife, Alice of Manchester, Wash., Delores I. Holtzinger and her husband, Roger of Ft. Wayne, Ind., John W. Strayer, II and his wife, Shari of York, and Lee Strayer and his wife, Dinah of Cranberry Twp. He also leaves 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Earl Frederick; a brother, Martin L. Strayer; and four sisters, Marguerite Spangler, Ethel Newbould, Phyllis Sutton, and Augusta Strayer. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Rose Cemetery. Family and friends are also invited to attend a memorial service that will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 25, 2007, at the Yorkana Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Yorkana Road, conducted by Joseph Woods, Jr.
