Polish Prime minister. He was a member of the Polish Socialist Party and Prime Minister of the Polish goverment-in-exile in London from 1944 to 1947. Born in Warsaw, he initially worked at a steel foundry before joining the Polish Socialist Party in 1896, which originally worked toward an independent Poland. After the First World War, he was appointed Minister of Labour and Social Affairs of the Polish Republic, became founder of trade unions and was editor of various Polish newspapers. He was one of the most prominent leaders of the socialists between 1919 and 1939 and was founder of Workers' Society of Friends of Chldren. After the outbreak of World War Two, he took part in the defence of Warsaw and procliamed a secret continuation of the Polish Socialist Party, after the take-over of Poland by German and Russian forces. In 1944, he was evacuated out of Poland to London, where on Aug 29 1944, he was named Prime Minster of Poland and became minister of labour and welfare at the same time. (bio by: s.canning)
