His long service in the army was distinguished by his exploration of the Rocky Mountains (1831-1835) & service in the Mexican War. The Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah are named for him. Bonneville served as colonel, 3d U.S. Infantry & as commander of Benton Barracks in St. Louis. After retiring, he was honored with a brevet promotion to brigadier general for "long & faithful services in the army."
