Jazz Musician, Vocalist. He took up the drums at an early age and began singing at his church prior to the age of five. While serving with the United States Air Force, he strengthened his drumming skills and following his return to Durham, he enrolled at North Carolina State University, where he studied Psychology, Literature and Theater. After a period as a teacher in Washington, D.C., he relocated to New York to pursue a career as an actor and found his break in the entertainment industry, when he landed a spot with Quincy Jones' band. From there, he went on to work with numerous artists including Nat Adderley, Stan Getz, Cal Tjader, Milt Jackson, Clark Terry and Herbie Mann. From 1968 until 1974, Tate served as a member of the "Tonight Show" band. After focusing on singing, he recorded his debut album "The Windmills of My Mind" (1968) and during the 1970s, he became identifiable with the children's TV series "Schoolhouse Rock!" Additionally, he contributed musically to the soundtrack for the film "The Hot Rock" (1972).
