Religious Leader. He served as the Archbishop of Toronto from 1888 to 1898. A native of Mooncion, Ireland, Walsh immigrated to Canada in 1852. Educated at the Sulpician Semainary in Montreal, he was ordained a priest of Toronto in 1854. Walsh then served as the Bishop of Sandwich, Ontario, from 1867 to 1869, and as the Bishop of London, Ontario, from 1869 to 1888, before being installed as Archbishop. Known for his charitable acts Walsh was instrumental in the establishment of the Sacred Heart Orphanage at Sunnyside, the St. John's Industrial School for Boys, and that of purchasing land for the Mount Hope Catholic Cemetery in Toronto. Archbishop Walsh also built sixteen churches, three chapels, and gave permisson for three convents for the Basilians.
