Religious Leader. A native of Pickering, Ontario, O'Connor served as the Archbishop of Toronto, Ontario, from 1899 to 1908. He was the first Canadian to hold that position since former Toronto Archbishop Michael Power. Educated at St. Michael's College in Toronto, he was made a member of the Basilian Order at the Congregation of St. Basil in 1859. His first post was serving as a priest at St. Basil's in 1863. O'Connor then taught theology at St. Michael's College in Toronto, and at the Superior of Assumption College in Windsor, Ontario, before being appointed as the Bishop of London, Ontario, in July of 1890. Three months in October of 1890, O'Connor was ordained a Bishop of London and served until January 1899, when he was appointed to the post of Archbishop of Toronto. He was installed in May 1899, as Archbishop and served until his resignation eight years later. Following his resignation he served as the Titular Archbishop of Laodicea in Syria from May 1908, until his death. Known for being a strong supporter of education, he helped to get certification for Separate school teachers and guaranteed an equal eduacation for all Catholics. Shortly before his death from diabetes and Bright's Disease, he was made Archbishop Emeritus of Toronto. He was buried in the Basilian Plot in Mount Hope Catholic Cemetery, in Toronto.Archbishop of Toronto, 1899-1908.
