This novel, largely inspired by his own experience of fighting, is the chronicle of the life of a battalion through the daily life of its soldiers. The novel won the Stalin Prize in 1946. He drew the script for the film The Soldiers directed by Aleksandr Ivanov (ru) in 1956.
