Actor. Born Benjamin John Whitrow, he was a veteran character actor who was best known to British television viewers as Mr. Bennet on the mini-series "Pride and Prejudice" in 1995. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and later served in the King's Dragoon Guards of the British Army from 1956 to 1958. His first acting role came in the 1963 film "The Small World of Sammy Lee," and he would go on to appear in numerous films during his career. His film credits include "Quadrophenia" (1979), "Brimstone & Treacle" (1982), "Clockwise" (1986), "Personal Services" (1987), "Damage" (1992), "Chaplin" (1992), "Chicken Run" (2000) - voiced as Fowler, and "Bomber" (2009). He also made his first television appearance in 1963 on the series "ITV Play of the Week." Besides "Pride and Prejudice," he would go on to appear in many television series and mini-series during his career with such credits as "Emergency-Ward 10," "The Brontes of Haworth," "Clayhanger," "Armchair Thriller," "The Sweeney," "Bognor," "Nanny," "Dempsey and Makepeace," "Muzzy in Gondoland" -voice work, "Ffizz," "Chancer," "The New Statesman," "The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling," "Island at War," Midsomer Murders," and "Casualty." He also performed in many theatrical productions throughout England during his acting career. He was nominated for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor in 1996 for his performance in "Pride and Prejudice" but was not successful.
