Professional Baseball Player. Real name Lawrence James Benton. He made his Major League debut with the Boston Braves in 1923 and spent his entire 13-season career in the National League with the Braves, New York Giants, and the Cincinnati Reds, mostly as a starting pitcher. Benton was known for his control and mastery of the curve ball. His best season was in 1928 when he led all pitchers in wins with 25 while throwing for the Giants. He also holds the dubious honor and National League all-time record for allowing the most homeruns in a single game (tied with two others) when he gave up six to the Chicago Cubs on May 12, 1930. Amazingly, he still won the game when the Giants outslugged them 14-12. He played in 455 games and compiled a record of 127 wins against 128 losses with a 4.03 earned run average. He also tossed 13 shutouts and recorded 122 complete games. He retired from baseball after the 1935 season and returned to live in Ohio where he worked as a supervisor for the Cincinnati Transit Company. (bio by: K Guy) Search Amazon for Larry Benton
