He was a statesman in the Kingdom of Saxony and in the Habsburg monarchy. As an opponent of Bismarck, he tried to bring about a common policy of the German middle-states between Austria and Prussia. He was in 1836 Secretary of Legation in Berlin and 1838 in Paris, 1841 Charge d'Affaires in Munich, 1846 Minister Resident in London and 1848 ambassador in Berlin. From 1849, Beust was Foreign Minister, and from October 25, 1858 to August 15, 1866 Chairman of the General Ministry of the Kingdom of Saxony. From 30 October 1866 to 1871, Beust was also Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, from February 1867, before the end of the compensation with Hungary, until the end of the year also Austrian Prime Minister. In February 1867 he conducted the settlement with Hungary and initiated the constitutional constitution. He led additionally from June 1867 to the function of kk Foreign Minister also the title of Chancellor. After his departure this term of office expired. After his release as foreign minister and chancellor in November 1871 he became ambassador in London and from 1878 to 1882 in Paris. His successor as kk Foreign Minister was Count Gyula Andrássy. In 1882 he retired to private life.
