He married Joanna Agnes Storm January 9, 1859, at Conewago Chapel, Adams County, and fathered Francis Ignatius (b. 02/01/60), John Anthony (b. 11/13/61), Mary Joanna (b. 03/13/64), Veronica Agnes (b. 04/06/66), Lewis Vincent (b. 02/18/68), Sarah Jane (b. 03/08/70 - married James P. Strausbaugh), and Sylvester George (b. 01/21/73). In 1860, he was a laborer presumably living in Oxford Township, Adams County, where he lived most of his life. He stood 5' 6" and had sandy hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Adams County October 16, 1862, as a substitute for Solomon Bender, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 7 as a private with Co. D, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. The company descriptive list display his first name as "Alowis."

He died of kidney failure at age 76-2-6.
