Ladd was coached at Grambling State University by the legendary coach Eddie Robinson and led the team to their first Southwestern Conference Championship. He was drafted into the now defunct AFL by San Deigo and was a member of that team's championship squad in 1963. With a height of 6'9" and 315 lbs, Ladd began Pro Wrestling during his rookie year in the AFL and picked up the nickname that stayed with him the rest of his life, "The Cat". He rose to fame quickly, becoming involved in famous feuds with Andrae the Giant and Dusty Rhodes, among others and was key in the development of the career of Sylvester Ritter, better known as the Junkyard Dog. Ladd was the only person in history to be inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, the American Football League Hall of Fame and World Wrestling Entertainment's Hall of Fame, the latter occurring in 1995.
