Aunt Katie was my husband's aunt, and one of the kindest people I have ever known. When I was very "upset" after Bill's death, Aunt Katie called me from her bed in a nursing home and told me to come over because she had something to tell me. She couldn't sit up and had to lie in her bed 24 hours a day and even getting to the phone was very difficult for her. Anyway, she said, "You are going all over town saying you are going to kill yourself, and I am here to tell you you are going to get over it sooner or later, so get over it now!"

In addition to be very practical and outspoken (like my mother), she was like my mother in another way: she always dressed well. She dressed up for picnics and always looked like a great, gracious lady.

According to family lore, Aunt Katie moved to Cleveland for a job (very unusual in those days). She met a very nice guy and was engaged to him, but he died of cancer. Then she met another man, also very nice, and they married. He bought a new Oldsmobile or Pontiac (I forget which) every year.
