Born in Ichowfu, China on August 25th, 1917, Gracia Jane Coonrad spoke both Mandarin and English as first languages. She became a Boy scout" in 1929, then at age 14 she went to highschool in Shanghai. At age 16, she journeyed on her own across the world by ship to attend Wooster College in Ohio, where she earned her BSc in Chemistry and met her love, John Chapman. They married in 1941, and lived in OH, IL, CT, CA, and MT, with their growing family, before settling in Victoria, BC in 1952, where they raised their family. Later she earned an Education degree and became a teacher for children with disabilities. After retiring, she moved for a time to her beloved Hornby Island, before returning to Victoria to be near her family.
