Wm. Burns was born in Ireland, March 16, 1840. When about 17 years old he came with his parents to America, settling in Indiana. At the age of 25 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Mathony, and contined to live in Indiana until 1882. He then moved to Illinois, there remaining up to 1888, at which time he and the family came to Iowa, moving upon a farm near Panama in Shelby county. Here his life companion was taken from him, January 21, 1889. The spring following he moved to the farm seven miles east of Woodbine where his home has been until the end came at 5 o'clock January 7, 1913, as the result of an attck of pneumonia. He lived to the age to 72 years, 9 months and 22 days.

Nine children, five boys and four girls were born to Mr. and Mrs. Burns, seven of whom survive and all but one were present during the last illness of the father. John, living in Montana, owing to the blockaded condition of the reilroads was unable to reach here until a few hours after his death. The surviving children are Frank and Tom at home, John of Butte, Montana, P.W. of Clinton, Iowa, H. J., Mrs. Jas. Hawn and Mrs. John Higgins, all living in the neighborhood east of Woodbine. The funeral service was held Thursday at the Catholic church at Portsmouth and the remains laid to rest in the Portsmouth cemetery by the side of those of his wife.
