Born in Obernbreit, Unterfranken, Bayern to Frederick and Barbara Gegner. Married Margaret Kuefner and they had one son, William. George arrived in New York Harbor aboard the Bark Columbus on November 29, 1869. Traveled with his brother Conrad and sister Kunigunde. Their parents arrived on December 6th, 1869 aboard the S.S. Schmidt. They traveled to Iowa and eventually settled in the Oskaloosa Iowa area in 1870 to farm. George committed suicide and was buried in Oskaloosa. His wife had his remains moved to Woodland cemetery in Des Moines in 1902.
