Daniel Buckley Funk III

Daniel's grandfather (b. 1820) and name sake came to Utah in the 2nd Brigham Young Company in 1848 with 1051 souls, the first Brigham Young Company 1847 had 147 souls. Accompanying him was his wife Mariah DeMill (28) their son's William DeMill (3) & Ezra Knight (2). Daniel's father Daniel Buckley Jr. was born 29 March 1849 in SLC. At the October conference in 1849, Brigham Young issued a call to settle Sawnpeetch Valley, 224 men, women, and children, 240 head of cattle and 40 + wagons, Answered the call. Daniel Sr., Mariah, their son's William and Ezra are listed in the company, but though not listed I'm sure that Mariah wasn't about to leave a 7 Month old son in SLC. After a difficult journey they arrived at the present site of Manti on 19 November 1849. The first winter they lived in dugouts under the temple hill and in 1850 built a small house, then in about 1873 the family moved to Sterling, Utah and around 1874 made a ditch and turned water into a basin forming Funk Lake. A large artificial inland pleasure and fishing place, covering seventy-five acres, to a depth of twenty feet or more, with pure mountain water, fresh from the crystal Six Mile Stream. Histories of each of the sons claim he played the more important role in the lakes development but I feel it was a family affair. Daniel Buckley Funk Jr. was Married 1869 in Rockville, Utah to Mariah Terry. The couple had 4 children, Ines Cathilda Funk Whitlock (1870-1851), Daniel Buckley III (1872-1943), William Farrel (1876-1879) and Riley (1878-1894). Mariah was burned to death try to save her child William, who was sleeping in the house when it caught fire (4 July 1879) Daniel Buckley III was then raised by his step mother Mary Christina Peterson whom his father married in November 1879 after the death of Mariah Terry. Since Daniel III's father Daniel Jr. had 200 Acres farm land in Sterling with orchard and nursery, 160 acres near Fountain Green, discovered the coal beds at Morrison and was involved with the Funk Lake property, Daniel III was probably keep very busy during his formative years. Daniel III courted Annie Carline Peterson and they married in the Manti temple on 17 December 1902, they had 4 children Daniel Alfonzo (1903-1904), Chauncy Martin (1905-1984), Lura (Sorensen) (1907-1988) and Theron Buckley (1920-1978).
