Mary Betsy Williams, daughter of Frank and Katherine Herron Williams, was born September 12, 1894 near Meadville in Kaya Paha County, Nebraska. She was the fourth child in a family of 8. Predeceased by her husband, her parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. She received her education at Meadville School and later taught for 7 years. She was married to James William (J.W., "Bill") Clark on April 20, 1919 at Highland Grove Church. To this union were born 5 children, Chester Williams, Gwendoline Belle, Vonna Mae, Ellen Katherine, and William Calaway Baker.
Bill and Mary spent their life farming and ranching mostly in the Meadville area. In 1944 they moved Meadville and owned and operated the Meadville store. Mary was appointed postmistress on July 20, 1944 and served in that capacity until the store was closed May 29,1959. Mary spent her last 15 years in the Bethesda Care Nursing Home in Ainsworth. Mary passed away on October 20, 1986.
Services for Mary were held Thursday, October 23, 1986, 2:00 p.m. At the Hoch Funeral Home in Ainsworth, NE.Rev. J. M. Peck officiated services with Mrs. Marjorie Wilkins providing music. Special words were spoken by Rev. Paul Clark, a nephew, from Rockford, Illinois. Casket bearers were Max Appelt, Glen Shrantz, Bob Keim, Chet Nelson, Virgil Strong, and Jim VonHeeder. Interment was in Ainsworth Cemetery, Ainsworth, NE.
Survivors include her children: Chester, Rockford,Illinois; Gwen Keim, Ainsworth; Vonna Strong, Winslow, Arizona; Katherine Beilfuss, Rockford; and William, Huntsville, Alabama; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Pearle Williams and Ruth Hedrick; nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
