A'Lelia Walker Robinson
Original name: Leila McWilliams
Birth: Jun. 6, 1885
Vicksburg
Warren County
Mississippi, USA
Death: Aug. 17, 1931
Asbury Park
Monmouth County
New Jersey, USA

The only child of Madam C.J. Walker, who is generally recognized as the first African American millionaire. Referred to by Langston Hughes as the "joy goddess of Harlem's 1920s," she hosted one of the most impressive salons of the Harlem Renaissance. Called "The Dark Tower," this converted floor of her New York townhouse was the site of many extravagant parties. Her guests included Harlem and Greenwich village writers, artists and musicians. She succeeded her╩mother as head of the Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company. As a lasting tribute to her mother, she completed Indianapolis' Walker Building. The building,╩which covers a whole city block, has served as a social and cultural center for the African American community there. Its elegant theater, originally intended to provide a place where African Americans were permitted to attend movies, now is a popular site for a wide variety of groups to meet. In 1922, A'Lelia became one of the only westerners to visit Ethiopian Empress Waizeru Zuaditu.
