Johnson put together the first truly extensive Dictionary of the English language which took 8-9 years to complete and was published in April 1755. It became the standard for over 100 years, until it was replaced by the OED (Oxford English Dictionary).

I had the pleasure to visit 17 Gough Square in 2004. It's a pity that the real Hodge wasn't there, because there was a warning sign that a gull was aggressive in flying at visitors. Hodge's statue deterred the gull not at all. My favorite Johnson quote is...(Read more) -
