Jerome was born on July 1, 1911, on a farm north of Tekamah, to Axel H. and Magdalena Gilbert. His father had immigrated from Sweden in 1872; his mother from Denmark in 1888.

He married Elvira Olinger on August 12, 1936, and the couple lived for 41 years on the farm where he was born.

He was a member of the National Farmers Organization and was an avid golfer since his retirement from farming in 1977.

Funeral services for Reuben Jerome Gilbert, 75, of Tekamah, were held at 10 a.m. on September 23, at the United Methodist Church in Tekamah. Gilbert died on Friday, September 19, 1986, at the Blair Memorial Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Survivors include his wife, Elvira, of Tekamah; three children; Gary and his wife, Connie, of Oxford, Ohio, Sandra and her husband, Larry Hansen, of Fremont, and Clark and his wife, Claudette, of Aurora, Colorado; nine grandchildren; two brothers; Rev. Carol J. Gilbert and Ben Gilbert, both of Tekamah; one sister, Naomi Wilson of Lincoln; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Katye and Elizabeth and one brother, Gordon.

Officiating at the services was Rev. Marion Knoell, pastor of the United Methodist Church at Tekamah. Burial was in the Tekamah Cemetery of Tekamah.

The Hamel and Peck Funeral Home in Tekamah in service to the family.
