Union Military Officer. The Piqua, Ohio native was accepted to the US Military Academy at West Point in 1844 graduating on July 1, 1848 and awarded a brevet promotion to 2nd Lieutenant. He was promoted again to 1st Lieutenant on January 8, 1853. When the Civil War erupted in 1861, McLean was promoted to Captain and assigned as Assistant-Adjutant-General on the staff of the United States Regular Army under General Horatio G. Wright. He was stationed at Wright's headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio and was quite involved with the defenses of that city during the summer and fall of 1862 when it was threatened by the Confederates. He served until his resignation on July 23, 1864 with a lengthly interval of non-duty until he was re-instated on March 3, 1875 and earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He died at his residence in Cincinnati, Ohio from debilities in 1884 when he was 56 years old. He was married to Sarah Kilbreath McLean who was later involved in a case that went before the US Supreme Court in 1912 unsuccessfully attempting to retrieve back-pay for the time between her husband's resignation and re-instatement. The court did recognize his rank as a Lieutenant Colonel and granted her compensation in that regard.
