Lauraette Sedgwick Duke, 93, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 16, 1999, at Samaritan Care Center, after a lengthy illness.
She was born Sept. 16, 1906, in St. Louis, Mo. After graduating from Medina High School in 1924, at the head of her class in scholarship, she taught grade school in Litchfield and Weymouth schools. She married O.C. Duke in 1928, having just celebrated their 71st anniversary July 7. They raised three children, Ronald, Marilyn and Verjean.
She was a very active member of Medina First Baptist Church, where she played the organ and piano. She also volunteered at Medina General Hospital. In the community, Mrs. Duke was involved in Clytean Club, Poe Farm Bureau Council and in the naming of Lake Medina.
She is survived by her husband, O.C. Duke; son, Ronald Duke; daughter, Marilyn (Frank) Ehrman; grandchildren, David, Christine, Linda, Mark, Clark, Daniel, Rhonda and Erin; many great-grandchildren; and nephew, Jim Sedgwick of Peoria, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Verjean; and brothers, Edwin and Morris Sedgwick.
Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Waite & Son Funeral Homes, Medina Chapel, 765 N. Court St. The Rev. William Cunningham will officiate.
Interment: Spring Grove Cemetery, Medina.
Visiting hours: 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
