William M Burton, also known as William R. Burton, was born to John J. and Malinda ( also spelled "Mahulda) Burton. His birth dates range from 1836 to 1841 but 1836 is on the tombstone and seems the more accurate. He stated that he was 22 and born in 1840 when he married for the first time in 1862. He married Mary " Polly" Warren, the daughter of Fielden and Rebecca Warren, on December 30, 1862 in Pulaski County and they had at least three children before she apparently died around 1875-76.

William then married Minerva Acton ( Action), daughter of James and Elizabeth Warren Acton, on August 14, 1876 in Pulaski City, Kentucky and they had at least eight children together and remained married until she died in the early 1920's

After he went missing from the Confederate 6th Kentucky Calvary in October 1862 it seems he made it to Pulaski County in order to marry Mary in December ( altering his age in the process). He then, as many others did in Eastern Kentucky, joined the Union Army as a private in Company H, 32nd Kentucky Infantry, July 1863 and served until some time in 1864.

On March 1, 1907 William applied for his Civil War Pension

William and Mary Warren's son, David Burton born in 1866 was the father of Kathleen Burton Ramsey Powers, the mother of William Burton Ramsey, my wifes father.
