Essex Robert H Bates, 81, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
He was born in Burington in 1919, the son of the late Hubert H and Marie Gilmond Bates.
He was a proud veteran of World War II, having served three and one half years, two years in the European Theater. As a member of Headquarters Co., Third Battalion, 276th Infantry, he served at Normandy, northern France, and central Europe. He is a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Ribbon for his contribution to the allied victory over Germany. He retired from General Electric Co., in 1979 after 28 years of service.
Jan 5, 1942, he married his loving wife Eleanor Blow.
Bob loved his family very much and took great pride in his children, grand children and great grand children. His beautiful smile and sense of humor will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
He is survived by hsi loving wife of 58 years, Eleanor; his daughters, Luana and her husband Alan Bartlett of Colchester, and Darlene and her husband, Bruce O'Neil of South Burlington; his sons, Gary and his wife Heather Bates of Cocoa, Fla., and Robert Jr and his wife, Rebecca of Austin Texas; five grand sons, Dean and Brett Bartlett, Jason and Gregory Bates, and Cody Bates; one grand daughter, Shelby Bates; three great grandsons, Alex Bartlett, and Garrett and Ethan Bartlett; on great grand daugther, Ashley Marie Bartlett; a sister Norma Gonyo of Colchester; and several nieces and nephews. His sister, Grace Dunn, predeceased Bob in 1981.
