Birth: Jul. 1, 1944
Georgia, USA
Death: Apr. 9, 1997
North Carolina, USA

Christian music singer, remembered by fans as "Mama Cook" of the Southern gospel group, The Cook Family Singers. She was best known for her sense of timing and comic relief. Reporters compared her antics to that of Lucille Ball. In the early 60's she was a Cover Girl model until her marriage to Donnell Cook. The two were married privately by a Justice of the Peace, but it is believed that after his mother found out about the marriage she made the two get married in a public church service as to reduce any doubts that the union was legitimate. The Cook Family Singers were regular performers on the Grand Ole Opry after receiving an invitation by Roy Acuff. Two of her best friends were "Mama" Mabelle Carter and June Carter Cash of the Carter Family. The Cooks often toured with the Carters in the early days of their professional careers. June's uncle was Academy Award winning composer, Johnny Mercer. The Cook's retirement in 1980 was brought on by her divorce from Donnell. She then married Richard Pinkston and the two remained married until the time of her death. It was rumored that even though she was married to Richard, they lived together for only five years when she left him. She relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina. They never formally divorced but never saw each other again. June had several children, but only her oldest son David L Cook has continued in the music field and is still active to date. Official death certificate lists her cause of death as "Complications of COPD".
