District attorney of the Thirteenth Judicial District of Texas, 1860; member of Texas state senate, 1871-73; delegate to the state Constitutional Convention of 1875. He served two terms as mayor of East Dallas (a separate incorporated community) and one as alderman. In 1888 he was appointed associate justice of the Texas state supreme count, serving until 1893.
