Wm. Lavanway Falls on Circular Saw, Is Killed

A 60 year old employee, William Everett Lavanway, of a Plant & Griffith sawmill at Jonesville was instantly killed yesterday morning about 10:45 when he slipped on a slab and fell head first upon a circular saw. The saw ripped his head.

State police were called to the company's No 2 plant on the south side of the Winooski River.

State's Attorney Allan Bruce indicated death was accidental.

State police said Henry Martin of Waterbury was nearby and saw Mr Lavanway just after he fell upon the saw. He pulled the mortally injured man away from the machine.

Dr John Fuller of Richmond said death occurred almost immediately.

Mr Lavanway was born in Duxbury, March 23, 1893. He was a long time Plant and Griffith employee.

He was the son of Clarence and Elva (Sherman) Lavanway. A Veteran of the first World War. He was the first to join the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9652 of Waterbury when it was organized last April.

Mr Lavanway's widow is former Ura Pratt McCullough. He also leaves two daughters, Mrs Marilyn Martin of Barre and Miss Norma Laavanway who lives at home; on son James, who is in Korea; five stepchildren; three brothers, Albert of Waitsfield, Harold of Readsboro and Clarence of Bolton, and three sisters, Mrs Arthur Livingston of Waitsfield, Mrs Harold Barney of Bristol Conn., and Mrs Arthur Shepard of Connecticut.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Federated Church in Waitsfield. Military Services will be held at the Lavanway family lot, Irasville Cemetery, Waitsfield, with the V F W Post in charge. Rev Don Seers will officiate, assisted by Rev M C Mayers. The V L Perkins Co., Inc of Waterbury, is in charge of the arrangements.
