Mathias Bryg was born in Jodlowka Walki, Poland, the son of Joseph Bryg (c1806-October 21,1880) and Catharina Jarosz Bryg (November 15,1818-February 12, 1882). Both parents died in Jodlowka Walki, Poland.

Mathias came to the US in July 1878 on the ship "North Star" with his first wife whom he married February 13, 1867 in Zukowice Stare, Poland. His first wife was Catharina Malek Starzec Bryg. She was the daughter of Mathias and Regina (Drwal) Malek.

Names of the children with Mathias and Catherina on the ship's manifest were Teckla 15, Marie 10, Joseph 8, Johann 6, Anna 2, and Paul 1/4. After Catharina died in an accident, Matthias married Anna Wilk in 1884.
