Oliver Goodrich, s. of Capt. Ephraim Goodrich and his 2nd wife Jerusha Treat, b. of record Sept. 14, 1714 at Wethersfield, Conn. He d. Sept. 23, 1780, Æ 67 (g.s.). [see gravestone inscription note.]

Oliver, wife Temperance, and all of their children were born in the Town of Wethersfield. When this family was living, the Town of Wethersfield had three separate Congregational Church Societies, or parishes: the Wethersfield 1st Society parish, Stepney parish (since 1843 now the Town of Rocky Hill, Conn.), and Newington parish (since 1870 now the Town of Newington, Conn.)

On June 23, 1740 at Wethersfield, Oliver m. Temperance Wright, dau. of Dea. Ebenezer Wright and Sarah Butler, b. May 29, 1724 at Wethersfield. She d. Oct. 24, 1803 at Wethersfield, Æ 80 (g.s.)

Oliver and Temperance had seven children of birth record at Wethersfield: Roger, Sarah, Prudence, Temperance, Oliver, Millicent (d.y.) and Millicent. Stiles in his 1904 "History of Ancient Wethersfield" relied on the 1885 Goodrich Family in America to claim four additional children were of birth record, but their stated dates of birth do not appear in the Wethersfield birth records or Wethersfield or Rocky Hill church baptism records (Pollicene, Ezekiel, Lucretia and Dorothy).

However, in Oliver's Sept. 12, 1780 Wethersfield will, six daughters are named:

• next my Will is that my six [i.e., unmarried] Daughters now with me shall have fifteen pounds Lawful money Each[, the] articles to be computed as they passed in the year 1774 (viz) Sarah, Pollicene, Lucresha, Mille [i.e., Millicent], Dorothy and Chloe and that [my son] Oliver pay Sarah, Pollicene and Lucresha and that [my son] Ezekiel should pay Mille, Dorothy and Chloe.

Oliver Goodrich and Temperance Wright had the following twelve identified children, only the seven oldest and the youngest child are of birth and/or baptism record, the others identified by their recorded marriages in the Wethersfield or Rocky Hill church records. The dates of birth for Pollicene, Ezekiel, and Lucretia are from the Goodrich Genealogy:

• i. Roger, b. Oct. 4, 1741, d. Nov. 11, 1828 at Rocky Hill, Conn., Æ 88 (Ch. Rec.); named in father's will; m. by 1765 Prudence ___, who d. in 1818, Æ 78 (Ch. Rec.). Nine identified children of the family baptized at the Rocky Hill Cong. Church; Stiles in his 1904 "History of Ancient Wethersfield" gave the family 15 children, three being the recorded children of Roger's brother Oliver Goodrich, Jr., while the existence of three others are not found in a vital, church baptism, or marriage record. (A classic example of throw a family up against the wall and see if it sticks for the next 100+ years.)

• ii. Sarah, b. July 28 (bp. 31), 1743; was residing unmarried with her parents at Rocky Hill in the Sept. 12, 1780 will of her father, but no further certain record found.

• iii. Prudence, b. Aug. 10 (bp. 11), 1745; no marriage record found and was not included in her father's Sept. 12, 1780 will.

• iv. Temperance, b. Oct. 10 (bp. 11), 1747; no marriage record found and was not included in her father's Sept. 12, 1780 will.

• v. Capt. Oliver, Jr., b. Sept. 4 (bp. Oct. 8), 1749, d. Mar. 1, 1830 at Rocky Hill, Conn., Æ 80 (g.s.); named in father's will; m. Feb. 3, 1771 at the Rocky Hill Church, Sarah Warner, who d. July 17, 1810 at Rocky Hill Æ 58 (g.s.) Twelve children recorded in the Rocky Hill Church records.

Thomas Curtis and Dorothy Bulkeley (q.v. Bulkley), b. Jan. 1, 1750/51 at Wethersfield. He d. testate at Rocky Hill Mar. 11, 1808, Æ 58 (g.s.) They had no known children.

Inscription

Per Tillotson's (1899) "Wethersfield Inscriptions" at Rocky Hill:

This Moniment is
in Memory of Mr.
Oliver Goodrich,
who departed this
life Sept. 23d AD. 1780.
In the 66th year of
his Age.

[As of 2011 his gravestone is broken and was lying face down on the ground to the left of wife Temperance's stone before the photo of his gravestone was taken by a descendent.]

Oliver's recorded date of birth on Sept. 14, 1714 is clearly contained in the original town record as copied by Barbour. Unless Oliver's birthdate is understated by one full year or Oliver was perhaps actually born on Sept. 24 versus Sept. 14, 1714, his gravestone inscription is in error. Until the early 1800s vitually all gravestones in New England used an abbreviation of the Latin phrase Ætatis suæ to represent a person's age at death, which is different than one's chronological age. Thus, on the day Oliver died he was 66 years old, and Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of his Age) 67, not 66 as inscribed.
