Elmer was the son of Charles A. Merrihew and Anna Charlotte Kinsey-Merrihew. He was a native of Orange Blossom near Oakdale and moved to Tuloumne Co in 1930 and opened the Merrihew Tire & Battery Shop in Sonora. 8 years later, he expanded to include a large auto parts department. He was a past master of the Sonora Masonic Lodge and a member of the Scottish Rite of Stockton, Aahmes Shrine of Oakland, Mother Lode Shrine Club, Pacific Commandery of Knights Templar, Sonora Royal Arch Masons, Sonora Council Royal and Select Masters and the Sonora Odd Fellow Lodge. He leaves his widow, Marion, his second wife. His first wife was Minnie Clausen of Neb. who proceeded him in death in 1951. Elmer and Minnie had two sons.
