THE HENRY BULLETIN, Tue., April 25, 1922, p. 5, col 2 [edited].
Mrs. Elizabeth Hairston, widow of the late J. T. W. Hairston, died at her home "Beaver Creek", two miles north of Martinsville, Monday morning. She was 86 years old.
She was a daughter of the late Marshall Hariston, who before the war was perhaps the owner of the largest body of slaves in the South and was probably the largest landholder in the South.
To his daughter, Mrs. E. P. Hairston, descended practically intact his whole estate, including many plantations and farms in Virginia and Mississippi and embracing many thousands of acres of land.
The Virginia seat of the family was and is in Henry County, though it had large holdings in Pittsylvania and Patrick counties and in North Carolina.
At her death, Mrs. Hairston's estate included more that twenty thousand acres of land and valuable real estate - business and residence property - in Martinsville.
Of her union with Major Hairston, only two children were born and both preceded her to the grave, a daughter having died in infancy and her son, the late Watt Hairston died several years ago at the Beaver Creek home.
Her nearest living surviving relative is her niece, Mrs. Annie Wilson James, widow of the late Hon. R. A. James, former congressman of Danville. Among her near relatives are Mrs. A. V. Sims of New York, Mrs. Sarah Hairston Glenn, Mrs. Edwin G. Penn and Mrs. T. A. Ranson of Martinsville, Mr. W. H. Hariston of Chatmoss, Mr. P. W. and Miss Mattie Hairston of "Hordsville", Mr. G. S. Hairston of Bassett, Mr. Samuel Hairston of Wenonda, Va. and many others in North Carolina and Mississippi.
