Political leader and jurist. He studied law and became an attorney in Albion. Except for a brief residence in Rochester, he resided in Albion for his entire life. He served in the New York Assembly and as Orleans County District Attorney. He was elected New York Lieutenant Governor in 1850 and 1852, serving from 1851 to 1855. He was elected State Comptroller in 1857, but defeated for the same office in in 1859 and 1864. He was a delegate to numerous state and national Democratic conventions. When the state Court of Appeals was established as New York's highest appellate court in 1870, Church was elected its first Chief Justice, an office he held until his death.
