Henry Vane the Younger
Birth: 1613
Death: Jun. 14, 1662

Politician and Statesman, Governor of Massachusetts. He was educated at Westminster School and Magdalene Hall, Oxford, before being sent to study at Geneva and Leiden. He became a Puritan in 1628, and took part in a diplomatic mission to Vienna in 1631. He travelled to New England and became the Governor of Massachusetts 12n 1636. During his time in America he played a role in the Pequot War, the purchase of Rhode Island and the foundation of Harvard College. After losing the election of 1637 he came home to England and was knighted by Charles I. He was made treasurer of the Navy in 1639, and sat in parliament from 1640. He sided with the parliamentarians in the English Civil War, but was in favour of keeping the monarchy refusing to join calls for the king's execution. While in parliament he oversaw the reform of the Royal Navy during the Anglo-Dutch War, and opposed the setting up of a state church. He also made proposals for electoral reform, but this put him in opposition to Cromwell, who expelled him from the government in 1650. While absent from political life he wrote the "Retired Man's Meditations" (1655) and "A Healing Question" (1656) in which he called for the submission of the army to the control of parliament, and which led to his imprisonment in Carisbrooke Castle. He returned to parliament after Cromwell's death, and called for limits on the protector's power. When the monarchy was restored, his role in Cromwell's government led to his arrest on a charge of high treason and he was held in the Tower of London. He was found guilty and beheaded on Tower Hill in 1662; a statue has been erected in his honour at Boston Public Library. (bio by: js)
