Services were April 8, 2000 for Clayton D. "Buzz" Whitmer, 85, of Galva at the United Methodist Church in Galva. The Rev. Roger Maize officiated with burial in Delaware Township Cemetery in Nemaha, with military honors conducted by American Legion Dibbern Post #454 of Galva, under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Mr. Whitmer died April 5 at Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake. He was born Feb. 21, 1915, in Cherokee County, the son of Orville and Hazel (Blackburn) Whitmer. He graduated from Galva High School in 1933, and later enlisted in the United States Navy.
He married Vera (Steele) Davis Sept. 30, 1942, in Omaha, Neb. The couple lived in Florida while he was stationed at Navy air bases in Key West and Melbourne, and in the Pacific Theatre. They also lived in Corpus Christi, Texas, for a short time. At the time of his discharge, he was an aviation machinist mate.
The couple moved to Galva in 1945 with their two sons, Charles and Bill. He drove a Galva school buss for more than 30 years, and also operated an auto service business in Galva.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church and IOOF, served as a volunteer firemen and was a 50-year member and past commander of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Charles "Buddy" and Jo Davis of Collins, and Bill and Verna Davis of Sheldon; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph Whitmer, and Harold and his wife, Dorothy Whitmer, all of Galva; and a sister, Charlotte Kelsch of Reseda, Calif.
