John Evert Van Alen

US Congressman. He moved to Defreestville, New York, in 1778 and became the owner of a large manor farm. He surveyed the town of Greenbush in 1790, and when the new town was incorporated Van Alen operated a general store there. He continued to work as a civil engineer and mapmaker, conducting initial surveys of many upstate New York towns. He was also involved in local government. In 1791 he was Rensselaer County's Assistant Judge. In 1792 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Federalist. Van Alen was reelected twice and served from 1793 to 1799. He did not run for reelection in 1800, but was elected to the New York Assembly, serving from 1800 to 1801. His home, the John Evert Van Alen House, built in 1793, is home to Hartgen Archeological Associates and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. (bio by: Bill McKern)
