Author. A best-selling novelist who had several of his works adapted for the screen. Originally trained as a concert pianist, he drew on this background for his first novel, "The Mephisto Waltz" (1969), about a writer whose body is mysteriously usurped by an aging pianist. It was made into a 1971 film starring Alan Alda. Stewart also wrote "Six Weeks", which became a 1982 movie starring Mary Tyler Moore, and his novel "Ellis Island" was turned into an awarding-winning CBS mini-series in 1984. His many other books include "The Mannings" (1973), "Century" (1981), "The Titan" (1985), "The Naked Savages" (1999), and "The Savages in Love and War"(2001), his last work. He died of cancer.
