James and Collista didn't have much money, but they managed to save a few thousand dollars. Not wanting to give more to one child than the other, James gave each of his children $200 (they had 14 children). At the time, Eugene and Lou Reeta were too young to receive their share. James said, "If you two children will accept your two hundred dollars toward an education, we will move to Waleska, Georgia, so you can attend Reinhardt Junior College." They agreed, so the family moved. Eugene worked in the college library and cafeteria to make extra money to help with his expenses. James Monroe got homesick for Pine Log, so the family left Eugene at Waleska to continue school and moved back to Pine Log.

After James Monroe's death, Collista wanted Lou Reeta to finish her education, so Collista moved back to Waleska, Georgia and took in four young men as boarders so Reeta could return and finish school. That was the year of the flu epidemic and they all got the flu. Lou Reeta had to milk the cow while Collista and Eugene were sick. When Lou Reeta was 21, she graduated from Reinhardt College, but stayed on an additional year to take art and music before she and Collista moved back home to Pine Log.
