He is best known to many for the role of "Francis Urquhart" in the 1990 British television mini-series "House of Cards" and for the role of "Chancellor" in the 2005 television series "Bleak House". A trained Shakespearean actor, he had an accomplished career on the stage before making his movie debut in the 1967 film "Marat/Sade". His other memorable credits include "A Midsummer Night's Dream", (1968), "Eyeless in Gaza", (1971), "The Darwin Adventure", (1972), as Sir Bernard Montgomery in the mini-series "Ike", (1979), "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy", (1979) and "102 Dalmatians", (2000).
